Mindfulness at Devonshire PS

Mindfulness lessons are delivered to Devonshire students, JK - 6, over a four week period by Victoria, of Little Soul Yoga. 

Week 1 - Mindful Bodies Review: Devonshire PS students focus on mindful bodies, mindful listening and mindful breathing.  Practicing how to hold our bodies still allows students to notice the quiet and calm.

Week 2 - Mindfulness and the Brain: The week begins with the review and practice of mindful bodies and mindful breathing.  The goal is for students to hold still for 2 minutes while paying attention to their breath.  Students are introduced to the basics of Neuroscience with the emphasis on how mindfulness works in the brain.

Week 3 - Heartfulness:  After a review of mindful bodies and mindful breathing, heartfulness is introduced.  The qualities of heartfulness include kindness, gratitude and generosity.  These qualities lead to greater well-being and happiness as well as essential supports for mindfulness practice.

Week 4 - Body Awareness: At the start of the final lesson, students review and practice mindful bodies and mindful breathing and then explore the concept of body awareness.  This simple mindful exercise helps kids calm down and relax. The body scan is a fun exercise for building more body awareness and emotional attunement. Emotions are not just experienced as an attitude but can be felt in the body.
